1 out of 4 women get raped in their lifetime?

Thoughts on the 1 out of 4 women get raped in their lifetime statistic?

dontneedfeminism:
It’s bull shit.
Not only is it from a study done in 1994, but 73% of the women they labeled as “rape victims” didn’t believe they had been raped, and about 40% of them went on to date their “rapist” after the fact.
So, if we don’t count the 73%, that brings the number down to 1 in 16. Still not great, but again, it’s from 20 years ago. Now lets factor in that, since 1994, rape has gone down by 80%.
That means that at the MOST, the rape rate of women is 1 in 80, which comes out to 1,875,000 college-aged women who have been raped (in the US).
Even if you restrict this to being just women who are 18-25 (about college age), that is *still* not 1 in 4, as there were approximately 20+ million women between the ages of 18 and 25 in 2000.
So, simply as a matter of fact, the 1 in 4 statistic is a lie. Anyone who uses it is simply spreading rape hysteria and propaganda.
sheabutterwitchcraft-nigga:
http://www.statisticbrain.com/rape-statistics/ sure keep saying saying that but this is from the year 2013 with the most recent percentages of rape that happened in the year 2013

Actually you’re wrong.

If you look under the college rape section you will see the following:

The following is from a study of 6,000 college students on 32 college campuses nationwide in 1987
The following is from a CDC study of 5,000 women on 138 college campuses in 1995
The section labelled “rape statistics” is unsourced, but it says that 89,000 rape are reported each year.

So lets see what it takes to get to “1 in 4”.

Lets go with 156 million women (about half the US population), and divide that by 4. That gives us 39 million.

Now lets divide that by the rape rate of 89,000. That comes out to approximately 438. That means, at a rate of 89,000 rapes a year, it would take 438 years worth of rapes to get “1 in 4”.

But then there’s that “60% of rapes are never reported” statistic. So lets factor that in.

Multiply the 89,000 by 2.5 (1/.4 = 2.5) and we get 225,000.

Now lets divide the 39 million by that again. We get 173.

So, even factoring in the 60% unreported rape, it would still take nearly 200 years worth of rapes to get to “1 in 4”.

But then there’s that “95% of college rapes are never reported to authorities” statistic, so lets do more math.

Multiply 89,000 by 20, and you get 1.78 million. Now divide 39 million by that and you get 22.

That’s a much more reasonable number. However, I have never once seen the 95% unreported statistic before, and since it is completely unsourced, I’m skeptical as to its legitimacy.

Even more unnerving, is the fact that Mary Koss was involved in the report you linked. In another report done by Mary Koss, she wrote that “It is inappropriate to consider as a rape victim a man who engages in unwanted sexual intercourse with a woman.”

So do keep in mind that one of the sources for your link, is a very blatant rape apologist as well as a Feminist, giving your sources several forms of inherent bias.

Feel free to try again another time.
[Editor's note: more on the terrifying Mary P. Koss ]

IF the one-in-four statistic is correct—it is sometimes modified to “one-in-five to one-in-four”—campus rape represents a crime wave of unprecedented proportions.

No crime, much less one as serious as rape, has a victimization rate remotely approaching 20 or 25 percent, even over many years.

The 2006 violent crime rate in Detroit, one of the most violent cities in America, was 2,400 murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults per 100,000 inhabitants—a rate of 2.4 percent.

The one-in-four statistic would mean that every year, millions of young women graduate who have suffered the most terrifying assault, short of murder, that a woman can experience.

Such a crime wave would require nothing less than a state of emergency—Take Back the Night rallies and 24-hour hotlines would hardly be adequate to counter this tsunami of sexual violence. Admissions policies letting in tens of thousands of vicious criminals would require a complete revision, perhaps banning boys entirely.

— Heather Mac Donald, "The Campus Rape Myth".

This alleged “statistic” was culled from a survey of 3,000 college women in 1982, conducted by Ms. Magazine

These women were asked only three questions:
  1. Have you had sexual intercourse when you didn’t want to because a man gave you alcohol or drugs?
  2. Have you had sexual intercourse when you didn’t want to because a man threatened or used some degree of physical force to make you?
  3. Have you had sexual acts when you didn’t want to because a man threatened to use some degree of physical force to make you?
The trouble is, many of the women the survey counted as “victims” did not actually feel that they had been raped, especially not the entire third of the alleged “victims” that continued to have a consensual sexual relationship with their supposed attacker.

Others that had consensual one-night-stands that they later regretted were also counted as “victims”.
When you have to lie about the prevalence of a crime, you’re not doing women any favors.
Feminism is supposed to be empowering, not to send us cowering.
Rape is not the “epidemic” that people are trying to claim it is.  It has actually decreased dramatically in the past few decades - up to 80% since 1979, despite an increase in the willingness of victims to report them

This is even further supported by data directly from the U.S. Bureau of Justice.

The only thing that HAS been increasing are FALSE reports of rape, which do a lot more harm to the lives of others than you may want to believe.
Third wave feminism is operating under far too many logical fallacies.  The Big Lie Technique is readily apparent in the use of the very “statistic” above which has time and again been proven to be false.

Overgeneralization continually tries to paint all men as monsters, when science has shown us that there are many psychological and biological factors that come into play to create someone with the potential to commit violence.

If you have to spread lies to support your cause, how much of a cause could you possibly have to begin with?

And what are you saying about femininity itself when you want so badly for us to live in constant fear?
  • How is this supposed to be encouraging women to be strong if all you let us aspire to is to be victims?
  • How is this encouraging women to be independent if you try to make us believe that we can’t take care of ourselves?
  • How are you helping women at all if you have to lie to us?

We persecute rape with more zeal than any other crime

  1. Beyond reasonable doubt doesn’t apply to rape.
  2. Feminists wish to slander accused names before convicted.
  3. Feminists against beyond reasonable doubt when it’s male rapists.
  4. Feminist changes mind on rape culture when her son is falsely accused.
  5. Universities strip basic rights from the accused.
  6. Change federal rules of evidence for men accused of rape.
  7. Women sent man to jail, won millions, then discovered her claim was false. She asks to let bygones be bygones. Because she was worried about her money.
  8. Boy accused of rape, found innocent, but committed suicide.
  9. Innocent man urged to accept plea bargain.
  10. Boy found innocent and killed by gang
  11. Woman makes 11 false rape allegations.
  12. Boy beaten to a pulp after being found innocent
  13. Girlfriend cries rape when dad finds out about her BF, he gets murdered.
  14. Mohammad Asif: “I keep thinking, ‘I just dropped her off, she was just a normal passenger, why has she done that?” -accused by said passenger of raping her at knifepoint - would be in jail except was exonerated by voice recording app on hsi phone.
  15. Soner Yasa: four drunk women reported to police that he had sexually assaulted them as a ploy to refuse to pay a $13 cab fare- Once again he’d be in jail if not for video surveillance in his cab.  Over $13

  18. False accusation will cost woman $55,000

And since I know this is only in reference to a rape culture toward women victims, how about the fact that men can be sued for not having sex, women use sex as bargaining chip, and people view women demanding sex as empowering?

Or the plethora of anti rape ads we have?

Rape is no where near as common as feminists make it out to be.

1 in 5 is bullshit.

Most feminists backed studies are bullshit.

Rape culture is bullshit. and stats prove it.

Anywhere from 97-8% of rape claims are false.

1-12 also bullshit.

Just how many men are rapists?

RAINN disses rape culture.
