“ they only have themselves to blame”

SJWs won, that Joker cover is being removed fuck everything
thespectacularspider-girl:
Oh fuck anyone and everyone who supported #changethecover.  This is the fucking artist’s response:
My Batgirl variant cover artwork was designed to pay homage to a comic that I really admire, and I know is a favorite of many readers. ‘The Killing Joke’ is part of Batgirl’s canon and artistically, I couldn’t avoid portraying the traumatic relationship between Barbara Gordon and the Joker.

For me, it was just a creepy cover that brought up something from the character’s past that I was able to interpret artistically. But it has become clear, that for others, it touched a very important nerve. I respect these opinions and, despite whether the discussion is right or wrong, no opinion should be discredited.

My intention was never to hurt or upset anyone through my art. For that reason, I have recommended to DC that the variant cover be pulled. I’m incredibly pleased that DC Comics is listening to my concerns and will not be publishing the cover art in June as previously announced.
With all due respect,
Rafa
Seriously, fuck you guys.  If you had a shred of artistic decency, if you ever loved the Batman books, you’d have supported this because this was a beautiful homage to the dark backstory that actually made Babs a fucking good character.

You assholes are trying to whitewash the events that created one of the most iconic differently abled heroes in comic books.  How the fuck is that not ableist?

feministslayer: FUCK.

egalitarianqueen: NO THAT WAS A COOL ASS COVER!

firstofficerdani:

Wow, guys. Are we really to the point where we’re saying “fuck you” to fellow fans? Do the people who were disturbed by these images really lack any “shred of artistic decency”? Have they never “loved the Batman books”? Because really, I think that ultimatum is bullshit.

The claim that anyone who supported #changethecover is just unfounded. People were never trying to undermine the fact that Barbara Gordon needed a wheelchair. That’s not what the cover was about & that’s not what #changethecover is about. The cover is reminiscent of a time where a person was physically mangled and sexually assaulted. This is depicting a woman and her ABUSER. I think people have the right to be deeply disturbed.

Do I believe the artist ever intended to harm anyone? No. Does this mean people aren’t justified in being disturbed by the image & calling out its connection to rape culture? Also no. The artist CHOSE to respect the view of a group of people who were harmed though he never intended to do so. He has put away with bigotry and yet people claim this is censorship!? Save the image to your goddamn phone phone or computer if you love it so much but don’t insult and belittle people who were disturbed by an image that was meant to be disturbing.

Show respect for other fans like they deserve and sure as hell don’t say Barbara Gordon was only ever an interesting character because of her trauma. She was interesting before, during, and after “The Killing Joke”.

Yes, she overcame a horrible incident which made her all the more strong. “The Killing Joke” allowed Barbara to develop more as a character but she was always a resilient woman who fought to ensure the safety of a city before her own. Don’t demean that woman or the opinions and well being of fellow comic readers. Enjoy your bigotry and have a nice day.

shut the fuck up.

like alright dani covered most of the bases lol but if you think trauma is the only thing that can make a good character obviously you’re not a fan of babs. dark backstoress are tragic and can be a good place for character growth, but if woman being physically assaulted to the extent babs was is the only place you’re finding women to be good characters then you either have incredibly low standards for writing or should look into why you love rape culture so much. because when you say beautiful homage, it’s a real life insult to people who have suffered this trauma. there’s nothing beautiful about what babs went through.

“You assholes are trying to whitewash the events that created one of the most iconic differently abled heroes in comic books.  How the fuck is that not ableist?”

do you even know what the fuck whitewash means? or do u have like a hat full of “sjw words” that you just draw from? it’s not ableist because no one is trying to deny babs history as oracle, as a wheel chaired name taking badass. what #changethecover is about is to be aware of the trauma and how insensitive it could be. babs being one of the coolest (of the few tbh dc get on that) disabled heroes ever, shouldn’t have to always draw back to the killing joke. it should draw back to the arcs that she spent as oracle, as a human overcoming that trauma and becoming stronger.

“NO THAT WAS A COOL ASS COVER!”

and finally if you think violence (real violence!!) against women is “a cool ass cover” fuck off.

this isn’t like a ‘sjw ruin everything’ its saying this is inappropriate. its rightfully called out. the killing joke is an incredibly dark story. everyone has the right to say ‘no this is unacceptable’ right now. and i mean ofc the urls are feministslayer and egalitarianqueen so like fuck that lolthespectacularspider-girl:

Hey, moron.  Its a variant cover.  Meaning you can buy the version WITHOUT that on it.  Eveyone who doesn’t like it doesn’t have to buy it and could get to still read the story.

Guess what?  Not every character gets over being shot.  Not everyone does that.  She has a flaw, she has a fear, and you guys apparently can’t grasp that.  Heaven forbid she be scared of an absolute fucking monster like Joker, who she has personal history with.  Right?

Its a fucking insult to the character to try and whitewash her backstory like this shit didn’t happen.
Also fucking lol.  Accusing a rape survivor of enjoying rape culture.  Seriously, take your fucking buzzwords elsewhere, princess.

This was a piece of art meant to make you uncomfortable.  It was meant to be dark, it was meant to be unsettling because that is part of Joker’s character and it was best defined by The Killing Joke.

But hey, we’re not the ones pulling down OPTIONAL art we don’t like because somebody might be offended.  We’re not the ones censoring.  Newsflash, cupcake, you’re part of the reason why companies don’t want to take a risk with female characters anymore.

Because you people will bitch when a female character is put in a similar situation as a male character.  Heaven fucking forbid a character be scared, right?

I bet you didn’t object to the varient cover for RHatO that featured Joker beating Jason Todd to death with a crowbar, right?  Where were you then?  How about you stop fucking infantalizing women because, frankly, we’re fucking stronger than that and I would much rather have female characters who we can depict in positions of pain, suffering and torment just like we do male characters.

But hey, I want actual fucking artistic expression and equality.  You?  You don’t.

michaelpoe:

To be fair… No one objecting to Jason Todd being beaten to death with a crow bar is practically a running joke all on its own, with that old ‘Call in to save Robin’ promotion they did during death in the family.

Though I have to wonder how many more internet drama fits involving Barbra Gordon DC will put up with before they just give up and brand her a ‘toxic character’ like the previous two batgirls.

korblabyss:

The cover was changed because some shit heads who care more about their precious no girls club nerd space sent death threats to people who thought the cover was inappropriate for any of a number of reasons, such as being triggering for some fans, being out of tone on one of the few DC comics appropriate for young teens, the deprotagonization of a female hero, or any of a number of other reasons (I only just heard about this today, so that’s just the reasons off the top of my head).

Again, this is nerd bro douchebags ruining things for themselves because they are fucking stupid enough to think “more fans=bad,” they only have themselves to blame.

“The cover was changed because some shit heads who care more about their precious no girls club nerd space

Really? That’s terrible. There were credible threats! From people! And we know their motivations! And I’ll be able to find about the police assessment of this from that link.

No?

No. All I see is a response claiming that some other people self-reported threats. No mention of the police.

You have no idea if the threats existed, let alone who made them if they did, let alone the motivations of the makers.

This is no more credible that a neo-nazi site claiming the terror of death threats from blacks and jews that they will not let anyone see.

Lanker-Simons allegedly made an anonymous rape threat against herself in a post on the UW Crushes Facebook page, and then lied about it to authorities.

“ being triggering for some fans“

We do not take away the freedoms from the mentally healthy out of fear the insane may find them frightening. Self-diagnosed mental illness is rubbish anyway; someone who is that ill should be in therapy, on meds, and off the internet.

You do not have the right to say I cannot eat pork because pork is forbidden to you.

You do not have the right to say I cannot have sex because sex is disgusting to you.

If you do not want to see my art - do not look. No-one is making you.

Instead, you believe you have a moral authority to decide what art can be allowed to even exist.

“ being out of tone on one of the few DC comics appropriate for young teens“

Bullshit. Young teens read horror stories and watch horror movies. That cover is nothing to them. They are not as feeble as you imagine. They do not need your protection.

Or will you be monitoring the school curriculums? Making sure they don’t have any books of devastation - no “War of the Worlds”, no “1984″ - in their library, in case some young reader might open it’s covers?

“the deprotagonization of a female hero”

Being hurt, crippled or killed doesn’t remove you from being a protagonist, you low-grade moron.

Adversity is something a hero faces. What do you want? The stories of Ms Beige Cube and her Perfectly Safe Existence?

I want more than that.

WE WANT MORE THAN YOUR CONFORMIST VISION.

WE WANT OUR HEROES TO FALL, YES.

but then

WE WANT OUR HEROES TO RISE.
